Alstroemeria

The foliage of Alstroemeria is above

Altsroemeria or Peruvian Lily is a very showy perennial with beautiful blooms in the summer, can be planted in a border or in a container, perfect for cut flowers. Prefers full sun, but will cope well enough into partial shade. Once the flower spikes have started to grow, they may need to be supported to prevent them falling over. Deadheading will prolong the flowering season .

In the autunm remove any dead foliage and they should appear again the next year. Alstroemeria are not fully hardy so a mulch will help the plant survive cold winters before a fully formed rootball is established, this usally takes around 2 years. A mature plant will survive the winter better.

Alsroemeria although are not toxic, it can cause skin irritations to some, so it is a good idea to wear gloves when handling. Large clumps can be divided in the autumn, but of course protect the smaller plants from frost during the winter.
