Hesperantha

The foliage of Hesperantha is above

Hesperantha is one of my favourites, due to the fact it is one of the last perennials to flower in the year, sometimes still in bloom into December. There are severasl names for this plant, Hesperantha, Schizostylis and Kaffir lily,  there can be a lot of confusion between them. It is actually quite simple, they are all the same. The argument continues, I will not be taking  side here. so moving on.

Hesperantha is quite an easy plant to look after, once the flower spikes start to appear they will need to be supported, they can be top heavy, after the flowers have finished the spike can be removed. At the end of the season, very little needs to be done, some of the foliage may die back, but the majority will stay green. In the spring there will be some of last years growth that has died off and needs to be removed.

Hesperantha will spread quite quickly given the right conditions. It likes damp soil but not waterlogged, also do not allow the soil to dry out in the summer, I left some in pots over the winter and they became waterlogged and the corms rotted, so do not make the same mistake as I did.

After a few years the plant will become large and crowded, so splitting it is quite easy, as when you lift a section of the plant it will separate quite easily.
